The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) and the Overseas Human Resource and Industry Development Association (HIDA) recently organized a seminar on Mercury-Containing Wastes Recycling (Managing and recycling of Used Fluorescent Lamps).
Held last August 26, 2014 at the New World Hotel in Makati, the seminar aimed to: 1) disseminate the technology for managing and recycling of mercury waste, and 2) encourage more people to pay attention on the collection of used fluorescent lamps in the Philippines.
The seminar program featured the following topics and speakers:
- New rules and regulations of DENR where busted fluorescent lamps are considered hazardous waste and strictly regulated – Dr. Eva Ocfemia, Assistant Director, Environmental Management Bureau, DENR
- Status of Japanese local government activity to collect used fluorescent lamps -Japan Waste Management Association (
- Minamata convention on mercury, UNEP activities and legal scheme to handle the industrial waste -
- Used florescent lamp recycling business of Nomura Kosan Co. and recommendation of feasible used fluorescent lamp collection and recycling program in the Philippines -
Mr. Jesus Reyes, Co-Chair of the PCCI Environment Committee and Mr. Yutaka Kadoya, Section Chief, Technical Cooperation Division, Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) delivered the opening remarks while Mr. Hajime Yajima, Senior Manager, Trade and Industry Project Group, Trade and Industry Projects Promotion Department of HIDA delivered the closing remarks.
The seminar was attended by eighty (80) participants from industry, business service organizations, professional organizations and non-government organizations. The meeting was also attended by representatives from the Japanese Embassy, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
The seminar was a joint activity with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) of the Philippines and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan.
